Fussy Eaters

Fussy Eating, it seems, is becoming a bit of an epidemic; if not world wide, then at least in the leafy, middle-class suburbs and filtering through to the outer suburbs.

Just about anywhere you find a bunch of mothers gathering and gossiping, really, both on and offline, in fact.

We know you’ve got better things to worry about than what your kid puts in its mouth, unless of course, it is your good bottle of vodka. We know you’ve not thought much about their eating habits. They are, after all, mostly happy, energetic, healthy, within a “suitable” weight range and annoying. Nothing to worry about, right?

Except that you’re feeling ostracised. Your kid’s ok eating habits are causing you to be an outcast amongst your peers. You’re just not fitting in.

Don’t stress. There is hope for you yet, even if your child is a fabulous eater (or, at least, you think he is, because you haven’t actually sat down and kept a diary …), and regardless of their age.

Basically, there are three types of “Fussy eater”:

1. The true fussy eater;
2. The child with an undiagnosed allergy, intolerance or similar;
3. The child with the over-scrutinising, anxious mother who hovers and needs something to worry about.

Children in the first category are so rare as to almost be considered an urban myth. Still, if you like drama, take them to your GP. NOt that they don’t exist, just that its a rare find.

Kids in the second category are no longer “fussy eaters” once they are diagnosed. Of course, if you’d prefer to complain about your kid being fussy with his food, don’t go down the diagnosis path. Simple.

Those in the third category are not “tempted” by ice-cube sushi, featuring smoked salmon and wasabi (fresh, not paste) or asparagus and goats cheese filo pastry puffs. If they are swayed by their Vegemite sandwich taking on the shape of an elephant, then they are technically excluded from points one and two.

(This also demonstrates more a child’s ability to successfully manipulate a situation to their own desires than a dislike of certain foods. But that’s another article altogether.)

Still, you’re feeling left out and just want to fit in. You CAN … in three easy steps.

Step 1. The Assessment

Start scrutinising every morsel of food that works it’s way into your child’s mouth. Keep a diary or some other record. You will quickly discover that their diet is not as diverse, inclusive or accommodating as you first thought. Quite possibly because you have a somewhat – normal - limited(ish) range on your evening meal menu and, by default, some foods just won’t make it to the table.

Therefore, a bunch of foods your child “doesn’t eat” will make the list. Start conversations that go into great deal about all the foods your child doesn’t eat, which is much easier than having to add a great deal more items to your shopping list, and thinking up and playing with new recipe ideas.

Step 2. Everyone has a food

If you feel you need something more substantial in your discussions, point 1 will help you to determine the foods your child genuinely doesn’t like. We all have something, some food or type of food we prefer not to consume. It may even be as simple as sweet versus savoury foods; most people prefer one over the other. And your child is a person, even if the way they eat appears to disagree with that fact.

Once you’ve determined the food/food types they don’t like much, add more of it to the meals you prepare for them. This will give them plenty of opportunity to start up the “I don’t like that” whine, and give you an honest opportunity to say “oh, my kids are such fussy eaters!”

Step 3. Acquired Tastes

If that fails, you can always look at more diverse foods. Some foods, like oysters and truffles (the found-under-trees-and-retrieved-by-trained-pigs kind, not the chocolate kind) have an acquired taste and are not naturally “liked” by most people the first time they try it. You have to give it a go.

These are brilliant foods to introduce to kids, particularly if you, like oyster-haters, refer to them as being somewhat akin to phlegm will ensure they are completely put off and flat our refuse to even try it.

In subsequent conversations with your Other Mother peers, you can join in on the “they just won’t give anything a try” complaint.

The downside of this option is that they may very well acquite the taste over time and deprive you of an opportunity to join in discussions with your friends.

Another trait of children to note, and that can be used to your advantage, is their innate reaction to all things new, and the immediate “I’m not eating that” response before they’ve even really seen what it is.

These strategies to get your own fussy eater can be applied to children of all ages. Once you have them established, you’ll fit right into any and all parenting social group conversation like a politician into a brothel.

Five Years in the Life of a Birthday Cake

Making the birthday cake for your child is an expression of love and proves your level of good-motherliness. Doesn’t it?

Ultimately reality kicks in, life kicks in and the birthday cake experiences, from year 1 to year 5 of the life of my first daughter go a long way towards explaining the development of my parenting skills.

Year 1

I make my own chocolate cake, topped with little pink butterflies. It takes hours that could be better spent in bed with a good book, but what kind of mum can’t be arsed making a cake for her child’s first birthday? A bad mum. And I am a GOOD MUM!

Year 2

My second child has just been born, so I buy a packet mix, but I fill the cake with fresh cream and strawberries. I still believe I am a GOOD MUM, but I am a mother of two now, so I am allowed a few breaks. I tell everyone I made it because I am mortified. I think they all believe me.

Year 3

The packet mix I used last year was great, so I do it again. And the icing that goes with it is just like the one I used to make. No one says a thing – good for them.

Year 4

The local bakery does a great sponge and the kids love it, especially the icing.

Year 5

At this point, I discover that no-one eats the cake, so I just ordered a tub full of icing …

Gourmet Dinner Party Desserts

The Festive Season (festive for whom I’m not sure, but anyway) is upon us, and this inevitably means Entertaining.

You will no doubt be required to entertain family, friends and quite possible work aquantainces, or even a Boss of some sort (yours, your partners or someone’s Boss that you’ve just picked up off the street – hey, its the Festive Season!)

We have developed a vast range of Gourmet Desserts that any Real Mum will not only be able to prepare and present, but she will do so competently and be proud of herself for doing so.

Let us know the fabulous comments you get after serving these ones up – how’s about we give you 5 to start with? You will need a large tub of vanilla ice cream. Or several, depending on how many people you are entertaining, and the level of stress you are experiencing. Make sure its not that low-fat rubbish, either!

Gourmet Dessert No. 1

Scoop large amounts of ice-cream into the desired (required) number of bowls. Make sure you put just a little bit more in yours.

Pour lavish amounts of Kaluha over the top of each one, ensure you get a bit more than everyone else.

Gourmet Dessert No. 2

Follow the same directions for the ice-cream as Dessert 1.

Pour lashings of Tia Maria over the tops of the ice-cream.

Gourmet Dessert No. 3

For the hotter days, or for a citrusy summery theme to your dinner party, scoop ice-cream into bowls and generously cover in Cointreau.

Gourmet Dessert No. 4

Lump some ice-cream into bowls and top with some Bailey’s Irish Cream.

On the off chance that there’s any left in the bottle, pour all that is remaining over ice and drink.

Gourmet Dessert No. 5

Don’t open the door when your guests arrive. Sit on the couch with a good DVD, like Thelma & Louise or Chicago (depending on your mood), your large tub of high-fat vanilla ice-cream and a bottle of Vodka.

Enjoy!!

Rice Soup

Winter is approaching, as, undoubtably are the snotty noses and sore throats. Its bad enough having the kids at home at the best of times, so avoid having htem home from school sick by being prepared.

Yup, Rice Soup will do the trick!

If you don’t already have one get yourself a rice cooker!

Follow directions on rice cooker & cook rice as normal.

Stock Options (the food kind)

  • make a stock from leftover chicken carcas, by boiling it up with some onion and a teaspoon or cube of chicken stock
  • make a chicken stock with water and powdered or cubed chicken stock
  • get a pack of chicken noodle soup and prepare it as normal

Dice up some vegies, and/or use tinned or frozen stuff – eg, carrots, broccoli, corn, cauliflower, bok choy, celery, onion … use your imagination.

Put all vegies into a dish and microwave for 2-3 mins, steam them or boil them (we prefer the microwave option)

When rice is cooked, spoon into bowls, add mixed vegies and pour stock/soup over the top.

Colds and sore throats banished, kids back to school, hubbies and partners back to work!

Woo Hoo!!

Easy done, and its very yummy, too.

Easy, After School Snacks

Those of you who are seasoned school Mums will know that kids are hungry when they get home from school.

For you first time School Mums – if you haven’t discovered this already, you soon will (snigger snigger evil laugh)

Its not like you do nothing with your day when they’re at school, and to have to make snacks for them as well, well it can all get on top of you.

So, what do Real Mums do for after school snacks? Easy…

Pre-schoolers and Younger Primary School Kids

You really want something easy to prepare and that’s easy for the kids to eat, without making a lot of mess.

The words “finger food” come to mind.

Many breakfast cereals come in perfect “finger food” size. For example, Nutri Grain, Weet Bix Fruity … Weet Bix themselves are great for those extra-hungry days.

No need for bowls and milk and other paraphernalia! Just pop the cereal/s on a nice plate and whack it in front of the kid/s.

When their friends come around after school, or you just feel like doing something special, pull the lid of a kid sized tub of yogurt.

Finger food with Dipping Stuff – perfect!

Older Primary School Kids

See above.

Bigger serves.

Or go with the Real Mums Theory – if they can get the lid off the Tupperware, they can eat it!

High School Kids (aka Teenagers)

Oh, for goodness sakes! What they’re not yet capable of feeding themselves????

Or capable of sucking in vast amounts of foods, still packaged, as they walk past it?

Give me a break!

Surprise Pizzas

These are a really easy to make, especially on those nights that you couldn’t be arsed! And to appease the Mumfia, they can also be healthy.

You’ll need a pack of muffins (the English ones, not the triple choc chip ones!), some cheese slices, a tomato and some ham.

Cut the muffins in half, stick them bottom up under the grill (or in the toaster if you like).

While they’re browning, slice the tomato and separate the cheese slices. Unwrap them from the plastic if you got those ones!

Now, listen up, once browned on the bottoms, remove the muffins from under the grill, turn them up the right way, put the ham on first – this is important.

Then a couple of slices of tomato and the cheese on the very top!! The cheese must go on last.

Stick ‘em back under the grill – cheese up – till the cheese is all melted, then stick em in front of the kids.

For yourself, use roma tomato & fetta cheese, with just a sprinkling of Italian seasoning & parmesan cheese.

Yummo!

You can also replace the tomato with pineapple, the ham with salami or other deli style meats. Or supermarket fridge meats, whatever.

In a pinch, you can also replace the muffins with pizza bases. Or bread, depending on your mood.

In a real pinch, you could also replace the ham, cheese & tomato with Vegemite.

There you go Surprise Pizzas – one for the whole family that they’ll just Love!

“Muu-uuum, you said we were having pizza tonight. These aren’t pizza! I want the ones from the pizza shop!!!”

“Oh, um, did I, well they’re pizza now. Surprise!!”

Quick Iced Coffee

The warmer (hotter) weather seems to be sticking around for a bit, and whilst a cuppa coffee is necessary to keep us going, a hot one is not always that enjoyable.

And its too hot to be wandering around in your knickers and singlet to the local coffee shop for a cream laden one. Here’s a couple you can do at home!

For One

Get your three cup coffee plunger (because we all know a 3 cup plunger is only good for one cup).

Add half to a full scoop more coffee than you would normally for a good cup of coffee (in my case, about 5 scoops).

Boil some water in the kettle.

Important bit: add boiling water to plunger, but only half fill it! This is very important for a good iced coffee.

Traditionally, iced coffee is sweet, so add a good teaspoon or two of sugar to a tall glass (preferably pre-chilled, but not essential) – I prefer raw sugar, but it’s up to you.

Pour the coffee from the plunger into the tall chilled glass (or MUG), fill with chilled milk and whack in a couple of ice cubes.

Sit back with a good book or DVD and enjoy.

For Several

Same as above, but this time use your 8-cup coffee plunger, which is good for about 3-4 decent sized drinks, or 2-3 MUGS.

Add extra coffee to the plunger, and add sugar this time to a decent sized jug.

1/2 to 3/4 fill the plunger, pour into jug, stir, and top with chilled milk. Add ice cubes. And a cocktail umberella if you like.

Stir again.

Pour into required number of pre-chillled glasses.

Share if you have to. Or just put the any remaining in the fridge and save it for later.

Options

You can add a scoop of vanilla to each glass. Or a nice moccha or coffee ice-cream is nice too.

For the evenings, a shot of Baileys Irish Cream goes down well.

And if you could be bothered, you could add some whipped cream to the top.

Twice Cooked Beans in a Rich Tomato Dressing

Put two slices of bread in toaster. Push down thingo so bread will toast. It should pop up by itself when ready. If it doesn’t, go buy a new toaster. Or shoes.

Open tin of baked beans in tomato sauce.

You may place them in bowl, place bowl in microwave oven, and microwave beans for 2 minutes on high.

Alternatively, place beans in small saucepan on stovetop and heat until warm enough.

Place toast on plate. Pour beans over toast.

Place in front of kids (and hubby, if he’s unable to fend for himself) – its not like you’re gonna be eating that! Go out for dinner with girls! Order nice glass of chilled chardonnay from sexy waiter, knowing that your kids and hubby will entertained for hours after their meal (that whole bodily functions thing).

Variations:

There are so many great, and easy, variations to this recipe. For example, baked beans come in flavours other than tomato! Amazing! You can get ham, or barbeque or low salt (urgh) and probably lots of others. If I had time to shop, I could tell you what they were.

Mother’s Day Breakfast, Brunch and Lunch

Mother’s Day is that time of year where you get to stay in bed of a morning and have your offspring (and partner if applicable) prepare a sumptious breakfast for your enjoyment.

Your Recipe for this year’s Mother’s Day Culinary Delights is:

Breakfast:

If you have young children, you will be treated to the sounds of tantrums as the older (whether its an older child, or your husband or partner), who has told them they must help prepare the gourmet delight, refuses to let them actually touch anything.

Your toast will be over-cooked, and will be adorned with any range of pleasures from daisies, to Vegemite with Peanut Butter, to grilled Parmesan cheese on Lego pieces.

Your coffee will be too weak, too strong and most definitely the wrong colour. Your coffee, however, will most definitely be coffee if you are a tea drinker only.

If you have older children and teenagers, you will awake to the sounds of them:

  • Snoring
  • Stumbling in the door/window after being out all night
  • Chucking a tanty because they are being forced to make you brekky and they know everything and don’t like being told what to do
  • Your toast will be non-existant, as will your coffee. Particularly if you are a coffee drinker.

Brunch:

After thanking your DNA for the scrumptious feast you have just endured, presented with the array of creations they have caringly stuck together at various educational institutes and kitchen tables, Brunch consists of sneaking in the nearest panty/wardrobe/safe-haven and stuffing your face with chocolate to stave of the hunger and/or nausea.

Lunch:

Ring around friends – book table at local nice place for lunch.

Or book table at far away nice place for lunch.

Eat lots so you don’t have to consume the lovingly prepared, tantrum inducing evening meal.

Enjoy!!!
